Arden smiled. She hadn't done anything like this since Sydney, her niece, had been with her. So, basically, she hadn't done anything fun. She wasn't good at acting like a little kid when there weren't any around. And she was bored, and she felt stuffy. Her life was a joke.
So, she was going to change it.
This year had been almost therapeutic for Arden. After a series of events, she had decided to become a better person, by any means necessary. And today, she resolved to be fun.
She had a rolled-up piece of plastic tarp tucked under her arm as she trekked up Mother's Hill. There was a stream babbling on the mountainside, perfect for her intentions. She picked a clear, sunny spot, and spread out her tarp. She had a complicated piping system that she had conjured up and, after some struggling, got it hooked up from the stream to the plastic.
She smiled again as she stripped off her tee shirt and denim shorts, revealing a bathing suit. The tarp was drenched, sloping downhill and starting to flatten out as it reached the foot of the hill. She stood there, looking down. It wasn't far to the bottom, maybe 15 feet.
And then she threw herself down.
