Ask any girl in the city, and she’ll tell you that they hate the rain. Sudden downpours sour dates, darken the sky, ruin flawlessly styled hairdos. Rain means umbrellas and unfashionable raincoats, drenched shoes and splashed jeans. Splattered rain on the windowpane means that you might as well stop worrying what you’ll wear to that picnic in the park, because it’s not going to happen, no matter how long you’ve been preparing for it. Yes, any girl in the city would tell you she hates the rain.

Ask any man in the countryside, and he’ll tell you that they hate the rain. Black clouds means staying indoors, and that’s not good for business. Can’t graze animals, tend crops, or do fieldwork when it’s pouring so hard you can’t see your hand in front of your face. Yes, any man in the countryside would tell you that he hates the rain.

Ask any group of children in the suburbs, and they’ll tell you that they hate the rain. Precipitation in the sky means cancelled soccer games, distraught mothers with no choice but to entertain their antsy children indoors. Rain means friends can’t come over and climb trees or go swimming in the local lake, means you can’t walk your dog or ride your bike. Yes, any group of children in the suburbs would tell you that they hate the rain.

But, if you happened to find yourself stumbling upon a small valley called Forget-Me-Not, and your feet led you up to the Inner Inn, and your eyes drifted to the red-head in the corner, and something in you prompted your mouth to open and form the words, “So, is the rain bringing you down, too?” Well, the redhead in the corner would look at you out of the corner of her eye, smile softly, and answer,

“I love the rain. It’s a new beginning. Wash away the old, and give something new a chance to grow. It’s how life should be. But we like to cling to our pasts. Washing away the old makes us feel like we’re losing ourselves, when really, not letting ourselves move on is what keeps us from finding ourselves.”

Yes, Nami, in more words than she usually speaks to anyone, would tell you that she loves the rain.
