Finally, the day came were I would be leaving to journey out to Sag Harbor for this new experience. The bus ride was rather quiet, or so I recall. But we were the second school to arrive and as I opened the door and slowly trekked my way to the area where they call it the ‘Black Box.’ The floor was nothing fancy, just a black floor with miscellaneous pieces of tape scattered about the floor. But it was a stage to me, where anything could happen, even if it wasn’t an actual stage with the traditional red velvet curtains tied up with a gold rope like I would spot in a theatre in New York City. It was warm inside, very warm. Everyone was introduced as everyone joined in a rather large circle to play some sort of name game while doing some little odd gesture. Saying my name, my hands rose up like the soul of one of those jazz singers back from the 1920s had taken control of my movements. The rest of the week was certainly a wonder that could only happen once to a few lucky few. Happily, I was one of them.

At the theatre, we were charged with one simple task—to write an original play. Seemingly not a hard task at all, right? Please, rethink those words, especially when the writer’s block begins to settle in my mind and all I want to do is tear out my hair.

Sex Role Stereotypes in the Odyssey

In Ancient Greece, the setting of Homer’s epic poem the Odyssey, women were considered lesser to the men. Homer very clearly sets aside the role of women from that of men by displaying a more male chauvinistic tone and point of view. Very few ladies had significant roles in comparison to the heroic warriors and physically powerful, trustworthy men. Odysseus is the formulaic and ideal Greek man in Homer’s point of view: strong, dependable, cunning, loyal, a warrior above all other warriors. Many of Odysseus’ characteristics are revealed in the Iliad, and carry over to the Odyssey. In the latter book, females are often presented as no more than temptation and an obstacle to overcome to preserve the mighty Odysseus’ honor and faithfulness.

A good majority of the women portrayed in the Odyssey are merely temptresses. Calypso, the beautiful and seductive sea nymph serves as Odysseus’ captor and forces him to sleep with her, which Odysseus performs- under protest, of course. Calypso is no more than a setback for Odysseus, who is held against his will and bewails for seven years, but he only leaves when the goddess is no longer pleasing to him and he has had enough of her. This implies that Odysseus had some extent of control and pleasure while on the island and is not, in fact, as tortured as he would like to believe he is. When he tries to leave, Calypso attempts to convince him to stay, saying that Penelope will age and die, while she remains eternally immortally beautiful. This is Homer’s way of showing women to be scheming and deceiving. When Zeus sends Hermes as a messenger to tell Calypso to release Odysseus, she complains about a double standard even within the gods: the male deities are allowed to have human lovers, but the goddesses are interfered with when they try to do the same.

Circe, the witch on the island where Odysseus and his crew land, tries to use her feminine wiles on Odysseus as well, but he is able to resist her lures and triumphs once more, even though the temptation is still there as he serves by her side for a year. Even though Homer describes Circe as immortally beautiful and irresistible, devoted Odysseus pays no heed to her loveliness with the help of Hermes, a male god who provides the hero with a drug to resist, but the same cannot be said for his crew, who fall victim to the allure of the witch. When Odysseus pulls out his sword and points it at Circe, Homer is subtly hinting at the threat that women pose to heroism of the war hero and the distraction that beauty is. While Odysseus is still in love with his wife, Penelope, he is so taken with the witch that he stays with Circe.

Penelope is the main female character and subordinate to her husband. While Odysseus sleeps with many nymphs during his ten-year struggle to return home, she has already been warding off suitors for that period of time to remain loyal to a husband that she isn’t even sure is dead or alive. Penelope, like her spouse, is shown to be shrewd and manipulative when she tells her suitors that when she finishes a burial cloak for her missing husband, but unravels it every night to stave off the inevitable.

In summary, women throughout the epic poem are inferior and an obstacle to Odysseus. However, without females in the story, there would be nothing to test Odysseus or test him, and thus, the tale is dependent on the role of women. While most of the female characters represent beauty and deception, there are the rare few moments when vigor, cleverness and trickery are revealed as character traits, especially in Penelope. It is, in essence, a battle of the sexes, with the men obviously coming out on top but the women using their assets to come from behind and overall make the story that much more interesting.

Two girls lived two very different lives, both on separate worlds, they did not know what was coming for them until they were dragged back to the World That Never Was by two members of the notorious Organization XIII, or otherwise known as the Thirteenth Order. The only information that they were told was that their families had owed a fee to the Organization and it was never paid. So they were taken as their servants as a price from the families. Of course, at first neither of the girls would believe it. Thinking that their families would come to the rescue.

But months began to pass by and nothing came for them.

Xemnas only sees them as servants but what happens when there is something a little more behind these two girls than expected? Could they have developed some sort of power? But more importantly, what will happen when both of these girls develop feelings for the enemy? For how could they love a man with no heart to feel in return?

The book is soo much better than the movie. I MEAN COME ON. I imagined George Wilson to be so much uglier in the book. In the movie, I thought he was pretty attractive with those big ol' blue eyes. And Daisy looked like crap in the movie. But Gatsby could have also been better in the movie, because I thought of him like the Tony Stark of the 1920s. Suave, attractive, and rich. “Promise me we’ll stay in touch. As much as we can.” He spoke, trying not to make it sound like a plea or a command.

She giggled and took hold of his hand in her own with a bright smile, “Of course I promise, silly.” There was the sound of a car horn in the background, causing her to flinch for a single moment.

His eyes almost seemed to become a little glassy with a hint of red.

She looked away, not being able to gaze at him without doing the same as him. But instead, she quickly moved close to him and pulled herself into a loving embrace with him. “I’ll miss you, so much.” Her voice cracked.

He held her within his arms like there was no tomorrow, “We’ll speak to each other every day. I promise.” There was a moment of silence before it was cracked in half by another annoying cry of the car horn. He held on to her a little tighter before he felt her fingers loosen their grasp as she let go of him.

They parted from each other. Her eyes downcast as she bit her bottom lip. He quietly put his hands into his jean pockets. “I guess this is goodbye.” She mumbled.

Their eyes locked once more, “I will not say goodbye to you.” He told her firmly. “This is only so long. We will see each other again.” She chuckled at his optimism, adding a smile. “I promise.” He finished. She went to hug him once more, but he quickly spoke up once more, “You have to leave, your dad is going to get mad.”

She backed down and sighed with a nod. “Yeah, okay.” She turned away from him and began to walk away.

“Don’t forget me.” He called out a little loud for her to hear as she crossed the lawn. She glanced back over her shoulders with a grin.

“I would never! I love you!” They both grinned as she got into the car and pulled away.

That was the last he had ever seen or spoken to her.

Natalya Ruska and Dominick O’Connell had been high school sweethearts back in the day; then it came time to graduate and move on to college. He wanted to stay together. She had other plans. He had stayed close to home while she moved all the way across America.

Who would have thought so much could change over a matter of a few six years?

He still lives close to home, but he has his own house now and can pay the bills and can still keep a few good pieces of change in his pocket with that good job of his.
