Chapter One 1/3
"The usual?"
"Yeah."
Skye leaned over the counter, closer to Jill.
"You working part-time?"
"Yeah, for Kai."
"Cool."
He watched her prepare some shaved ice, and pour it into a dish. Her delicate fingers smoothed the counter, she gracefully pushed the dish over . . .
"Skye! Are you in this world?"
"S-sorry! Yes, ma'am! I am!"
Skye began to realize he was saluting, and quickly pulled his arm down-pulling a muscle.
"Ack! I pulled a muscle- again."
Jill giggled, and tried to hold back a laugh; but failed.
"You look so funny!"
Skye blushed, and took the shaved ice without another word. He left with the dish, head down in a skulky mood.
"She'll never like you now, smarty pants."
A spicy scent wafted into his nose, and a tanned boy popped in front of him.
"Hey, dude!"
"Kai!"
Skye stood in shock, and looked down at a broken dish with a melting pile of ice. He'd broken a company's dish, and lost food.
"Oh, god. I'm so sorry, Kai!"
He began to cry frustrated tears, and carefully, but quickly, picked up the pottery shards and rushed back to the stand in dismay.
"Sorry, Jill . . ."
She'd seen him before, with the sly smile, and in a flash he'd disappear again, always accurately mysterious and cocky. But now- he was blushing red, stuttering, and shy.
From shy to sly . . . that's my Skye."Mother's words?"
Skye looked up at her curiously,
"Mother's . . . words? What do you mean?"
Jill looked at Skye, her face beet red like the fake coloring in the shaved ice Skye'd paid for, and stuttered her words.
"Somehow, some way, my mother would always talk about you. And for some reason- she had a baby picture of you- as if she'd stolen it . . ."
Skye gasped.
Could she be . . ."Yes, Skye, mother always cried at nights. Wishing her 'son' would come back."
